Mildred (Poody) Greckel passed away August 7, 2011 in Berthoud. She was 90 years old.
She is survived by Clarence, her husband of 67 years; son Michael Dean of Longmont; daughters Candace Kay Davis (C.L.) of Holcomb, Kansas, Cynthia LaRee Gaiser (Jeff) of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Julie Ann Hoekstra (Scott) of Westminster. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and a great-great grandson.
Mildred graduated high school in 1939 and began her teaching career. She taught K-8th grade for six years in four different county schools in NE Nebraska.
On March 16, 1944 she married her true love, Clarence Greckel. They had four children and farmed in Bloomfield, Nebraska. In 1966 they purchased the Spur Motel in Liberal, Kansas and began their next adventure: the motel business. They were there for nearly 10 years, built a successful business, then decided to move to Smith Center, Kansas where they purchased the Silver Saddle Motel. In addition to the couple owning and managing a motel, Mildred opened an art studio where she taught her new found passion of oil painting. She taught, students created and Clarence framed the works of art.
In 1984 they retired and moved to Berthoud, where Mildred again started teaching oil and water color painting for approximately 6 years. Many people learned they had talent under her tutelage, which was laced with a sharp sense of humor and great deal of TLC. We will miss her but we know she’s with the Lord now and that gives us great solace.
Memorial services will be held Friday 10:00 a.m. at Viegut Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Mildred Greckel Memorial Fund in care of Viegut Funeral Home.
