Dear Editor: Our sheriff’s race seems to be filled with candidates with little to no experience, or experience that ended years ago. There is however one exception. Justin Smith is a current commander at our sheriff’s office and he has served there since 1991. He has worked as a patrol deputy, K9 officer, investigator, sergeant, and division commander over administrative functions, the jail, and operations. Justin Smith also obtained his Masters in Criminal Justice while on the job ... Full Story

Sheriff’s office explains wildland fire role

Sheriff’s office explains wildland fire role

Wildland Fires Several newspaper articles and anonymous comments in "RH Line" of the Reporter Herald regarding the Round Mountain Fire in the Big Thompson Canyon prompt me to write this. It is obvious that the sheriff's role and responsibility for wildland fire suppression is generally not understood. Recent statutory changes further muddied the waters on the jurisdictional issues involved. By Colorado statute, the sheriff has always been the "fire warden" for the unincorporated areas of ... Beware door-to-door con artists

Beware door-to-door con artists

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office would like to caution residents against door-to-door con artists.  These itinerant criminals known as “Travelers” and “Gypsies,” generally appear in the summertime and are often members of one family.  Annually these professionals collectively make millions of dollars off the vulnerability of older or unsuspecting Coloradoans. A FRAUD ALERT!  supplied by the State of Colorado Office of the District Attorney offers these observations on ... Full Story

Justin Smith most qualified candidate for Sheriff

Justin Smith most qualified candidate for Sheriff

First, I'd like to thank Mr. Bruning for 6 years of military service. Next, I'd like to thank Major Justin Smith for his 20+ years of Law Enforcement experience. Justin's credentials for the position of Larimer County Sheriff far outweigh those claimed by Mr. Bruning. Of course, if Mr. Bruning would decide to let people know what experience he had to offer from the missing 19 years of his life, we might be able to look at his experience levels differently. To us, and many citizens of Larimer ... Full Story

With a $43 million budget and 420 employees, the office of sheriff needs a person who has the business experience to handle these. The right person could save taxpayers' money by streamlining the sheriff's department. That person is Carl Bruning. Carl brings the kind of leadership needed to manage an organization effectively. His executive business experience and leadership experience as an U. S. Air Force officer and commander position him for success in this role. Endorsements also say alot ... Full Story

Smith, true lawman and public servant

Smith, true lawman and public servant

I’ve been watching the Sheriff’s race with some interest over the last several months and I have to ask; who is this Constitutional Carl that recently arrived on the political scene? I’ve attended candidate forums and speaking engagements and to be honest, I’ve yet to hear any real substance from him. He simply espouses the kind of rhetoric that we’ve all come to expect from aspiring politicians over the years. Once you cut through the rhetoric, he appears to be just another ... Full Story

Justin Smith experienced lawman

Justin Smith experienced lawman

To The Editor: I’ve taken the last several months to study the Republican candidates for Sheriff. On one side, I see an experienced lawman, Major Justin Smith, who has demonstrated his commitment to public safety and to caring for his community. With experience in all aspects of our Sheriff’s Office, 19 years of dedicated service to our community, a record of fiscal responsibility and a both a bachelors and masters degree in criminal justice, he has obviously prepared himself and ... Supporting Justin Smith for Sheriff

Supporting Justin Smith for Sheriff

Growing up, my parents always told me that the best way to judge a person’s character was by what they did when no one was looking. As the field of candidates is asking for our support to become our next sheriff, I am asking what have you done for our community when no one was looking? Let me tell you what I learned about republican candidate Justin Smith. Over the last two decades, he has been a member of the Site Improvement Team at Shepardson Elementary School, a member of the Partners ... Full Story
