Douglas Nichols, Ph.D., 1942-2010

February 19, 1942 – January 21, 2010 Doug Nichols, Ph. D., paleontologist and Berthoud resident, passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 21, 2010, at the age of 67. Born in Jamaica, Long Island, N.Y., he was the son of Kenneth C. and Beatrice O. Nichols. Doug lived in Long Island, N.Y. and New Jersey while growing up. Marion Anderson passed away peacefully on Oct. 28, 2009 at Hospice Care Center of Boulder/Broomfield County in Louisville after a short illness. She was born May 24, 1936 to John and Rosie Brehmer in Bancroft, Neb., the fifth child born to the family, which grew by three more children over the next several years. Mary G. Schmidt, 81, of Berthoud passed away Oct. 26, 2009, at Pathways Hospice, Loveland. She was born Oct. 22, 1928, in Pana, Ill., to Raymond and Celeste (Whittman) Groll. Mary graduated from Pana High School and attended college in Illinois and Denver. She married Alban J. Schmidt on Nov. 26, 1949. They lived in Denver until 1972, when they moved to Berthoud. Jack R. Kidd, 77, of Berthoud was born in Utah to Henry and Leola Kidd. He graduated from high school in Billings, Mont., went into the Air Force for four years and returned to college, receiving a bachelor’s degree in business from Idaho State University. Melissa Klepac Golay, 49, passed away due to cancer on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009. She was a 1978 graduate of Berthoud High School. Golay is survived by her husband Troy; daughters Jessica and Jennifer; son Benjamin, 8; grandchildren, and parents Ben and Mary Jane; and sister Janet. Gilbert A. Perry passed away peacefully at his Berthoud home Oct. 12, 2009. He was born in Hyannis, Mass., on July 19, 1927. Early schooling was in Harwich, Mass. He graduated from Northeastern University in Boston and served in the Coast Guard. Perry married his high school sweetheart, Naomi Ruth Allen in 1948 and died exactly 68 years later on the anniversary of the day they met. They moved to Colorado in 1953. Kennon Michael Lebsack, 52, died Sept. 20 at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Tucson, Ariz., after a sudden illness. Lebsack was born March 27, 1957 to Robert and Priscilla Lebsack in Loveland, CO.
