Smith Has Positive Approach
With over 17 years in the public safety in northern Colorado, I have had the opportunity to work with many local and federal law enforcement agencies throughout the Front Range. I can tell you that Major Smith is one of the most professional law enforcement officers I have had the privilege to work with. His knowledge of law enforcement, state statutes and more importantly dealing with people, people on a personal level this is highly valued and appreciated. It is clear his breadth ... Full Story

Smith best choice for sheriff
Dear Citizens: The Larimer County Sheriff faces an upcoming budget crisis like no other before him. This budget crisis is based on reduced revenues, limited growth, and pending tax cuts. The current Commissioners have identified the need to cut 5% of the sheriff’s office budget for 2011 should certain circumstances prevail. The bottom line is that the budget for the sheriff’s office, along with all other county departments will be cut over the next few years without ... Full Story
Smith equals leadership
I watched the news and read the newspapers over the last couple of weeks for the fire west of Carter Lake. This fire came on the heels of the tragic Boulder County fire. I noted the extensive presence and involvement of our Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. I was impressed with the professionalism and poise of Major Justin Smith, who assisted with command duties at the fire. Smith spoke with the media representing the Sheriff’s Office and their significant role in the fire ... Full Story
Smith has experience
Dear Editor: The race for Larimer County Sheriff comes down to experience, plain and simple. It doesn’t matter what political party is involved, it doesn’t matter if no party is involved. What matters is whether the next sheriff is capable, qualified, and ready to lead now. We have three choices, the Republican, the Democrat, and the independent. One has many years of experience as a deputy, a line-level troop; one has some supervisory experience a couple of decades ago; one has ... Full Story

Dear Citizens of Larimer County: The office of sheriff requires minimum standards to perform the duties successfully, just as any other organizational leader should have. Education, professional experience, personal experience, and the respect of peers are some of those minimum standards. The leader of a sheriff’s office in this century should have years of law enforcement experience, management experience, leadership experience, educational experience, and the respect of peers ... Sheriff’s job is local issues
Dear Editor, In our local race for county sheriff, a few believe that the candidate of choice is one that will stand with people “who plan to protect our nation at all costs” (Jeffry Aufderheide, Wellington, Coloradoan Letter to the Editor, July 3rd). Much is being made of concerns about the power of our federal government, our porous national borders, and our constitutional rights. These are expansive concerns we should all share with our state and national ... Full Story
Please vote for Justin Smith
Dear Editor: Our sheriff’s race seems to be filled with candidates with little to no experience, or experience that ended years ago. There is however one exception. Justin Smith is a current commander at our sheriff’s office and he has served there since 1991. He has worked as a patrol deputy, K9 officer, investigator, sergeant, and division commander over administrative functions, the jail, and operations. Justin Smith also obtained his Masters in Criminal Justice ... Full Story
